30-second guide to Veneto region

The Italian region of Veneto sits in the north-east of the country, on the Adriatic coast. It is bordered to the south by Emilia-Romagna, to the west by Lombardy, to the north by Trentino-Alto Adige to the north-east by Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and to the east by the Adriatic sea. The eighth largest of the Italian regions, it is the fifth most populous, with some 4.5 million inhabitants.

The most famous city in Veneto is Venice (Venezia), but other major cities include the historically fascinating centres of Padua (Padova), Vicenza, Verona and Treviso. Other towns include Castelfranco Veneto, Bassano del Grappa, Valdagno, Mira and Belluno. The north of the region has good skiing, including the resorts of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Tourism is a major industry in Veneto then, but far from the only one. The plain of the River Po is excellent wine-growing country, and fertile farmland.

Transport links are good, with airports including Treviso, Venice Marco Polo, Vicenza and Verona. Unsurprisingly for Italy, the rail network is excellent, with hubs at Rovigo, Padua, Verona, Vicenza and Treviso and the whole region being well served for rail links. There is a good motorway network, with excellent links between the major cities.
