Feste and festivals in Umbria
The dates of festivals obviously vary from year to year, so check before you book. Terni has the Saint Valentine’s Day festival (on 14 February of course) and Cantamaggio (April-May) celebrating the return of spring. Norcia has the Fair of the Prized Norcia Black Truffle (plus other specialities from the Valnerina) in late February. Late March sees Norcia’s Feast of St. Benedict, the Patron Saint of the town. Todi has its antiques fair from mid-April to early May. Castiglione del Lago has the Painting the Skies kite festival on the shores of Lake Trasimeno in late spring. Narni has the Ring Race (April-May), part of the celebrations for patron saint Juvenal.
Assisi has its celebration of medieval and Renaissance Italy in the Calendimaggio (early May). Mid May sees the Ceri Race Festival in Gubbio, and the St Rita Celebrations in Cascia. In late-May Gubbio has its Crossbow ‘Palio’.
June sees Orvieto’s Festival of the Palombella and Bevagna’s Fair of the Gaite, and the Corpus Christi celebrations in Spello and Orvieto. The Spoleto Festival is in June-July. Gubbio Festival takes place in July-August, and there is a summer season of classical plays. Perugia hosts Umbria Jazz during July, and Passignano sul Trasimeno has its Palio of the Boats. August sees the Montefalco August Festival and the Corciano Festival, while Città della Pieve hosts the Palio dei Terzieri. More music in Perugia in August-September with the Umbrian Festival of Sacred Music, and Spoleto has its opera season in the Autumn.
September sees Foligno’s Quintana Tournament and the Games of the Gates in Gualdo Tadino. Trevi’s autumn festival, including the historical procession and Palio, is in October, while Assisi has the celebrations in honour of St. Francis in early October. Late October sees Eurochocolate in Perugia.
