About Scalea, Cosenza, Calabria
Scalea, Cosenza province, Calabria region
A pretty little town on the Calabrian coast, Scalea is in Cosenza province. Lying on the Capo Scalea promontory, the town gets its name from the terrace of fields that lie on the hillside overlooking the sea. The old town has an ancient wall, with the new Scalea Marina towards the beach, with modern hotels and villas, and some excellently equipped bathing areas.
Scalea has been much invaded down the centuries, a succession of Swabian, Angevin, Aragonese and Spanish conquests. Sights in the town include the 12th century Palazzetto Normanno (the Norman Castle); the 13th century Palazzo dei Principi; 8th century Church of San Nicola in Plateis; the 16th century Torre Talao, part of a network of 337 coastal towers built as an early warning system against raids by pirates. An attractive feature of the town is the main street, actually a stairway that begins in the Piazza de Palma.
