About Amantea, Cosenza province, Calabria region
One of the main tourist centres on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian Coast, the town of Amantea, in Cosenza province, has ferry connections to the Aeolian Islands. This ancient town dates from prehistoric times, with its first recorded place in history appearing in the seventh century. In 839 it was captured by the Arabs, then the Byzantines took the town in 889. It subsequently feel to the Normans and then the Angevins. The town was besieged by Joseph Bonaparte and his French troops in 1806-07. Notable sights in the town include the Rocca (the castle), the Church of San Bernardino, the 17th century Palazzo delle Clarisse and Palazzo Mirabelli. The 14th century U Turriune, a large tower at Campora San Giovanni. This area also has archeological digs revealing the town’s prehistoric roots.
