A hotel in Rome … near to Termini station
Rome’s Stazione Termini, or Termini Station is the main transport hub in Rome, from which flow out not just trains to other Italian cities, but to mainland Europe, with daily international train services to Munich, Basel and Paris. 150 million visitors a year use its 29 platforms, and it also has trains out to the Rome airports, is a nexus for the Metro lines A and B, has a major bus station and is of course a magnet for Rome’s taxi services. So you of course want a hotel in Rome near to Termini Station. Good idea, because it will put you close to many of the main sites and sights and (though you have millions of passengers passing through) it doesn’t have to mean sacrificing peace and quiet.
Trainspotters might like to check out Terminal Station, the 1953 move by director Vittorio De Sica and starring Montgomery Clift and Jennifer Jones, which has some nice location shots, though as well as being panned by the critics it’s linguistically flawed. The ‘termini’ doesn’t translate as ‘terminus’, but refers instead to the Baths of Diocletian situated just across the road from the station’s main entrance, and translates as ‘thermal baths’. So where to look for a hotel in Rome near Termini station? Nearby sights include the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the church of San Giovanni in Laterano and S. Croce in Gerusalemme. You are very close to the university district (the Policlinico, the Universita degli Studi di Roma, otherwise known as La Sapienza, and the Citta Universitaria) and the British Embassy lies just north of Stazione Termini. Metro stations close to Termini include Porta Maggiore, Vittorio Emanuele, Ponte Casilino, Repubblica and of course Termini itself. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rome near to Termini station it’s an idea to widen your search to ‘a hotel near Porta Maggiore’, ‘a hotel near Repubblica Metro’, ‘hotels near Rome university’ and so forth.
