Visit Volterra – views ‘n vampires

Do go and visit Volterra, even if you’ve never heard of, or read anything by, Stephenie Meyer. Certainly her New Moon book (part of the teentastic Twilight series) has delivered countless coachloads of tourists to Volterra – her Volturi, old-skool vampires, reside in caves under the town – but the sweeter-than-virgin’s-blood irony is that none of the film ended up being shot there – Montepulciano was cheaper, so the story goes. Meh, Tuscan hilltop towns – seen one, seen ‘em all.

Except no – Volterra is special. It looks great as you approach it, it looks great as you explore it, and it looks great as you look out across the surrounding countryside. Dating back to Etruscan times (there is a very good Etruscan museum, as well as a good art gallery – pinacoteca), it is today a lot smaller than it once was, large sections having sheared off and fallen down the cliffs on which the town perches. What is left is lovely though, and the cental Piazza is a fine spot for a coffee whilst planning your route (on foot) around the narrow streets and fine buildings of Volterra.

Below are a couple of photo-galleries, and do be sure to look at our range of Volterra hotels.
